Values of Using Trustworthy Sunday School Curriculum

December 12, 2016 by Darryl Wilson Leave a Comment

As Sunday School teachers, an important element of our job is teaching people the Bible. To do so well requires that we reach people and that we get to know them and care for them. In addition, it is essential to heed Paul’s advice to…

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15)

Using trustworthy Sunday School curriculum can help us in “rightly handling the word of truth.” Curriculum is a “course of study.” Consider these values for trustworthy curriculum:

  • delivers a consistent plan for studying the entire Bible (Old and New Testament) over a set period of time;
  • offers dependable treatment of Bible passages and doctrines (solid biblical commentary);
  • addresses assigned age group in appropriate ways; and
  • suggests a variety of age appropriate teaching styles to meet the variety of learning style preferences.

In addition to the above, I want to offer these suggestions for using curriculum:

  • read the scripture passage before reading curriculum materials to allow God to speak to you first;
  • stick with one curriculum rather than jumping around causing unbalanced treatment of the “whole counsel of God” (Acts 20:27);
  • teach class members how to get the most out of the curriculum;
  • make assignments to individuals and the entire class to help them get even more out of your time together;
  • allow the Holy Spirit to lead you in utilizing the curriculum to best meet the needs of the members of your class; and
  • evaluate each session noting what went well and what could be improved next time.

From your experiences, what would you add to what has been shared? Leave your thoughts by pressing Comments below. Make disciples. Be revolutionary!

Two encounters are critical. First, the leader encounters God in His Word and is changed. Second, the leader guides the group to have a life-changing encounter.

In John 13:34-35, three times Jesus said, “Love one another.” Your group is the ideal place to practice and launch the kind of love for one another that shows the world that we are His disciples.
