Evangelism in the Classroom?

February 7, 2011 by Dwayne Lee Leave a Comment

I am reminded of a story about Charles H. Spurgeon. One day he stated to a group of pastors that it did not make a difference about his text, because somewhere in the message he would make a beeline to the cross. As teachers of the Lord Jesus Christ everything we do should point people to Jesus. Our lessons are no different. Many times we hurry through the lesson to make sure we are done within our allotted time instead of being intentional about drawing out Christ in the lesson.

Therefore as leaders and teachers of our classes make it a point to do the following every week in class:

  • Look for talking points that show Christ
  • Reference Scriptures that portray Christ throughout the lesson
  • Apply Christ to

the cultural relevancy of your lesson

  • Make Jesus the focal point of your time together

When you show people Jesus you are pulling on the heartstrings of God! Jesus Himself said, “If I be lifted up, I will draw all men unto me”. Granted He was speaking about His death, but the fact remains we are called to speak the name of Jesus everywhere we go.

So why not in the classroom? Why can’t we be evangelistic and talk about Jesus throughout our lesson? The fact is we can and we should. You may not do it every week, but why not be intentional about how you approach your class with an evangelistic eye. When you do, you will see your lessons taking on more of an evangelistic disposition.

Remember, you are not teaching about facts and figures or just giving out biblical information. You are teaching about the one who came to this earth to seek and to save that which was lost, to give His life a ransom for many. To give life and to give it more abundantly. So why not be evangelistic in our classrooms! Teach your lessons with an evangelistic fervor and make a beeline to the cross!

Two encounters are critical. First, the leader encounters God in His Word and is changed. Second, the leader guides the group to have a life-changing encounter.
