Conduct an Adult & Student Sunday School Space Walk

Because of first impressions, Sunday School leaders should constantly keep an eye on educational space. Look at your space from the perspective of preparing for a guest, named Jesus. How does it look? Is it safe, clean, and ready to use? Can you care for His sheep well in the space?

Walk through each area of your space using the following checklist. Circle yes or no for each question. Add comments on any question you answer negatively. List specific reasons for your answer and ways the situation can be improved.

Space Appearance

  1. Is the space clean and free from clutter?     Yes     No     Comments:
  2. Is the paint/wallcovering clean, safe, and not a distraction?     Yes     No     Comments:
  3. Does the space have adequate lighting, even at night?     Yes     No     Comments:
  4. Is the floor covering/baseboard clean, safe, and not a distraction?     Yes     No     Comments:
  5. Are doors and windows clean, safe, and not a distraction?     Yes     No     Comments:
  6. Are there any safety concerns in the space?     Yes     No     Comments:
  7. Does the space have a warm, welcoming feel when you walk in?     Yes     No     Comments:
  8. Is the space regularly cleaned between uses?     Yes     No     Comments:
  9. Do all posters, wall hangings, and pictures relate to the current quarter?     Yes     No     Comments:

Location & Usefulness

  1. Is the temperature in winter and summer comfortable?     Yes     No     Comments:
  2. Is the space easily accessible by all class attenders?     Yes     No     Comments:
  3. Is there a sign identifying which group meets in the space at what time?     Yes     No     Comments:
  4. Does the space have at least 12-15 square feet per attender?     Yes     No     Comments:
  5. Are there any sound problems in the space?     Yes     No     Comme nts:
  6. Are there any odor, allergy, or health problems with the space?     Yes     No     Comments:
  7. Are restrooms located near the space?     Yes     No     Comments:
  8. Is the space able to be rearranged according to teaching methods of the lesson?     Yes     No     Comments:
  9. Could any walls be removed to provide more effective space and flexibility?     Yes     No     Comments:
  10. Are electrical outlets accessible, adequate, and safe?     Yes     No     Comments:
  11. Is good communication and cooperation occurring between persons sharin g the space?     Yes     No     Comments:

Furnishings & Equipment

  1. Are chair seats 18” above the floor?     Yes     No     Comments:
  2. Are chairs clean and safe?     Yes     No     Comments:
  3. Is there a place nearby to hang coats?     Yes     No     Comments:
  4. Is the space filled with excess furnishings?     Yes     No     Comments:
  5. Are any additional furnishings needed?     Yes     No     Comments:
  6. Do the furnishings match one another (same size/style/color)?     Yes     No     Comments:
  7. Have tables been removed from the space to allow flexibility (except for large spaces in which multiple classes meet around round tables)?     Yes     No     Comments:
  8. Is there a small storage space or a set of shelves located nearby?     Yes     No     Comments:
  9. Is there a useable bulletin board or tack strip in the space?     Yes     No     Comments:
  10. Does the space have an accessible wastebasket in good condition?     Yes     No     Comments:
  11. Does the space have a markerboard (chalk dust is an allergen), min. 36×45”?     Yes     No     Comments:
  12. Is visual electronic equipment available when needed?     Yes     No     Comments:
  13. Is glare from windows a problem (blinds or curtains can be sources of dust allergens)?     Yes     No     Comments:

You may be able to add additional questions to assess your space, but this list should get you started toward recognition of issues in your educational space. Periodically walk through each classroom with a checklist just for that space. Then work with church leaders who can address the problems and needs that are discovered. Be revolutionary! Conduct a space walk today!
