Sunday School matters. Be revolutionary!

When a Mistake Really Isn’t a Mistake

April 6, 2011 by Marie Clark Leave a Comment

What if you did everything right before making an enlistment visit … but you were wrong! That happened to me, and everything turned out right. I hope I have your attention now.

I had just become Sunday School director in the church and we needed a junior high girls teacher. I made a list of potential teachers (I had been a member already for a couple of years) and prayed about it. The Lord seemed to be pointing me to Terri, an outgoing forty-something gal. I gathered the curriculum and a copy of the church’s job description for Sunday School teachers. Then I called for an appointment to visit with Terri about teaching.

The Holy Spirit had guided me to Terri. What I didn’t know was that He wasn’t quite through with His guidance! As Terri and I began to talk about the possibility of her teaching teens, she surprised me by saying, “I have really been burdened about young women whose husbands will not come with them to church or who are overseas on military assignment. They don’t seem to be comfortable going to the young marrieds’ class full of couples.”

Terri had already identified four young women in the church who attended worship sporadically without their husbands. In addition, her recently married daughter and a couple of her friends were part of this target group. By the end of the enlistment visit, I had a new Sunday School teacher…and the birth of a new class for young adult gals.

The moral of this story: Pray and seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance as you enlist Sunday School workers. Don’t be surprised if He goes beyond your expectations. (P.S. The Holy Spirit already had another person picked out to teach the teens. In His time, He led me to enlist her as well.)

Two encounters are critical. First, the leader encounters God in His Word and is changed. Second, the leader guides the group to have a life-changing encounter.

In John 13:34-35, three times Jesus said, “Love one another.” Your group is the ideal place to practice and launch the kind of love for one another that shows the world that we are His disciples.
