Telling the Story of Jesus

February 9, 2011 by Kiely Young 1 Comment

I sat in and listened with joy as I heard the teacher emphasizing the importance of “telling your life story” as a tool for personal evangelism. This particular class had just completed a study of Robert Coleman’s class book, The Master Plan of Evangelism. They wanted to be sure every member understood what Jesus did in training His disciples. They also wanted to be sure every member knows how to “tell their life story.”

The leader said, “You need to be able to tell your life story in any situation with anyone God gives you the opportunity to tell. Tell three simple truths of your life in three minutes or less. Tell about your life before you became a Christian. Tell how you became a Christian. Tell what your life is like today as a Christian.” He went on to say, “We need to help every member of our youth and adult Sunday School classes know how to do the same.” He said, “We need to mentor them one-on-one.”

Those are bold words. But, what a difference we could make in everyone of our classes in every church across America if every member would take the time to write out and be able to tell their life story as a Christian. Then, as God gives us opportunity, share that story in love and determination.

  • What if every youth and adult class were to see at least one person come to Christ through the telling of our life story?
  • Who are you praying for?
  • Have you written down in a prayer journal the names of individuals you know who do not know Christ so you can pray for them every day?

Let’s remember Acts 1:8, “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” (NKJV).

We can make a difference if we are prayerfully intentional to tell our life story.

Two encounters are critical. First, the leader encounters God in His Word and is changed. Second, the leader guides the group to have a life-changing encounter.

In John 13:34-35, three times Jesus said, “Love one another.” Your group is the ideal place to practice and launch the kind of love for one another that shows the world that we are His disciples.
