Sunday School Revolutionary

Sunday School matters. Be revolutionary!

No More Saturday Night Specials!

January 2, 2011 by Dwayne Lee 1 Comment

It has been said that Sunday School teachers handle the two most precious things to the heart of God: the people of God and the Word of God!

The Sunday School teacher carries a tremendous amount of responsibility to dispense the Word of God week after week.  Listed below are some fundamental and basic principles to consider when it comes to leading a class through a Bible study.

BIBLICAL TEACHING:

What is required for Biblical teaching?

  • Prayer:  Bathe everything you do in prayer!  It is the KEY to a successful bible study.
  • Study:  The KJV Bible says to “Study” the Greek word literally means to be earnest or diligent.  Simply put, to be a good teacher you need to study the Bible.
  • Preparation:  Prayer and study are definite components of preparation. Using credible commentaries and other resources that have been agreed upon by the pastor and Sunday School director are also useful tools.  Read and meditate on the designated section of scripture every day.  Listen to the Holy Spirit as He guides you through the verses.
  • Presentation:  You will be confident to stand in front of the class, ready to teach, after you have prayed, studied and prepared yourself.  Focus on providing your class with what they need to hear, NOT everything you have learned.  Speak with confidence, but humbly; boldly, but in love; and always point them to Christ!

CULTURALLY RELEVANT:

  • You have the opportunity to allow your class to discover that the Bible is current and culturally relevant.  Make the scriptures come alive, and make sure your class walks out of the room knowing that the God who was with Moses, Daniel, Peter and Paul is the same God who walks with them!

Make a commitment this year that there will be no more “Saturday Night” specials!

Two encounters are critical. First, the leader encounters God in His Word and is changed. Second, the leader guides the group to have a life-changing encounter.

In John 13:34-35, three times Jesus said, “Love one another.” Your group is the ideal place to practice and launch the kind of love for one another that shows the world that we are His disciples.
