Sunday School Revolutionary

Sunday School matters. Be revolutionary!

Missional, Ministering, and Multiplying through the Sunday School

December 2, 2010 by Kiely Young 2 Comments

Priceville Baptist Church is not an unusual church in a vibrantly growing community. It is not a “contemporary church or an emerging church.” It is a traditional church in an urban setting near Tupelo, Mississippi. But it is a church with a vision to reach their community.

This church went through a consultation process with us called the Church Sunday School Growth Plan. We assigned a consultant to help them look at their church, their community and discover the potential for growth. We assisted them in discovering needs, enlisting workers to begin a new Bible study class, and equipping those workers for ministry.

They caught the vision. They said we can do that again. They reached a single Mom through a new ladies Sunday School class. This single Mom lived in an apartment complex. She asked the teacher if they could begin a ladies Bible study in the apartment complex to reach ladies who had to work on Sunday. They said, “Sure, we will do it just like we did for our Sunday School class. We will enlist a small group to help you. Then, we will equip them to help you.”

Very soon that group of ladies were reaching so many other ladies they needed to start another group in the apartment complex. Today they have three ladies small groups in the apartment complex. They have also begun other classes on Sundays.

Their mindset is to do whatever it takes to reach their community and grow multiplying classes. These principles will work for any church in any community who has the determination to work hard, pray intensely, and stay in tune with open doors of ministry. Be missional, ministering, and multiplying through your Sunday School!

These are the stories we need.

Most of us will never become truly missional or inovative or purpose driven or seeker driven or hot cool contemporary. But, we can be effective and we can reach people.

someone ought to write a book on The Normal Church.

Two encounters are critical. First, the leader encounters God in His Word and is changed. Second, the leader guides the group to have a life-changing encounter.

In John 13:34-35, three times Jesus said, “Love one another.” Your group is the ideal place to practice and launch the kind of love for one another that shows the world that we are His disciples.
