Sunday School: Read the Bible for Life

June 2, 2011 by Darryl Wilson Leave a Comment

My wife and I began a devotional study together tonight using George Guthrie’s Read the Bible for Life. In the first DVD lesson, Dr. Guthrie reminds us of a recent LifeWay Research study which discovered that the number one predictor of a person’s spiritual health is whether or not they read the Bible on a daily basis.

Would you allow me to ask you a very serious and personal question? What are you currently doing to challenge, encourage, and strengthen daily Bible reading? As a Sunday School leader, you have responsibility to influence the spiritual health of all of those in your care. You are a steward, charged with responsibility to care for those God has placed in your reach–inside and outside of the church.

What can you do to help your Sunday School or your class take steps toward daily intake of God’s Word? How can you help them listen to God in His Word and obey Him daily? How can you reinforce spiritual disciplines of Bible reading, memorization, application, and prayer?

One thing you could do is a class or group study of Read the Bible for Life. It would ideally be at another time than Sunday morning. In fact, I would recommend the entire church from teens through adults do so. The nine-week study has a Leader Kit available with a workbook, trade book, 3 DVDs featuring nine teaching sessions with the author, and a CD with information about making it a churchwide campaign. LifeWay is making this significant preparation leading up to an emphasis on reading the Bible daily in 2012. In fact, the Read the Bible for Life material is designed to help your members learn to read God’s Word with understanding. This can be great help in advance of an emphasis on reading the Bible daily next year.

What can you else can you do to challenge, encourage, and strengthen daily Bible reading by your attenders? What can you do to lead them to lead adults and teens to listen to God in His Word and obey Him daily? Press Comments below and share things you have done along with any ideas and plans you have. Let’s work together to make disciples.

Let’s strengthen Christians and the church. Be praying. Be in His Word. Obey Him. Be like Jesus. Be revolutionary!

Two encounters are critical. First, the leader encounters God in His Word and is changed. Second, the leader guides the group to have a life-changing encounter.

In John 13:34-35, three times Jesus said, “Love one another.” Your group is the ideal place to practice and launch the kind of love for one another that shows the world that we are His disciples.
